Pachysandra terminalis 'Silver Edge'

Common Name: Japanese Spurge

Pachysandra terminalis ‘Silver Edge’ is a broadleaf evergreen perennial groundcover grown for its dense, low mat of glossy green foliage edged in creamy white to silvery white. It spreads by rhizomes to form a carpet in shaded areas, especially under trees, along foundations, woodland edges, and other spots where turfgrass struggles. Small white flower spikes appear in spring, but the main ornamental value is the variegated evergreen foliage. Type: Broadleaf evergreen perennial groundcover Mature Size: 12–18 in. wide × 6–12 in. tall USDA Zones: 5a–9b; some nurseries list 4a–9b Form: Low, dense, spreading, rhizomatous mat Light: Part shade to full shade; avoid hot full sun, which can burn foliage Soil / Water: Average to moist, well-drained soil; tolerates heavy shade, clay, dry soil, drought once established, and erosion-prone slopes Bloom Time / Length: Spring to late spring, usually April–May; about 2–3 weeks Wildlife: Small white flowers may attract small bees and insects; dense evergreen foliage can provide cover for small wildlife; generally deer and rabbit resistant. Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent for shaded groundcover, mass planting, erosion control, foundation beds, under-tree planting, woodland edges, and shady borders. ‘Silver Edge’ is especially useful where a brighter variegated groundcover is needed to lighten dark shade. It forms a neat, uniform carpet and helps suppress weeds once established, but Japanese pachysandra can spread aggressively in some areas, so it is best kept out of natural areas where invasiveness is a concern. Care: Plant in part shade to full shade and water regularly until established. Space plants about 6–12 inches apart for faster coverage, or wider for slower fill-in. Avoid hot afternoon sun and poorly drained soil. Thin dense patches as needed to improve air circulation, and remove winter-damaged foliage in early spring. Watch for pachysandra leaf blight, root rot, and scale in crowded or wet conditions.
