Magnolia Acuminata

Common Name: Golden Glow Cucumber Tree

Magnolia acuminata (Cucumber Tree) is a large native deciduous tree with an upright pyramidal habit when young, becoming broader and more oval with age. It features large, simple green leaves, tulip-like greenish-yellow flowers in late spring, and cucumber-shaped fruits that turn rosy red as they mature. It is valued for its stately form, native status, cold hardiness, and as an important parent of many yellow magnolia hybrids.   Type: Tree (Deciduous) Mature Size: 20–35' W × 40–70' H USDA Zones: 3a–8b Form: Upright pyramidal, becoming broadly oval with age   Light: Full sun to part shade Soil / Water: Moist, well-drained soils with organic matter; moderate water, prefers consistent moisture and does not like drought Bloom Time / Length: Late spring; short to moderate (about 2–3 weeks)   Wildlife: Bees, birds Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a shade tree, specimen, or park tree for large landscapes. The flowers are more subtle than showy magnolia types, but the tree offers handsome foliage, unusual fruit, and strong native landscape value. Its importance in breeding yellow magnolias also makes it notable horticulturally.   Care: Plant in deep, rich, well-drained soil with room to mature. Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods. It performs best where roots stay cool and evenly moist, and it is sensitive to heat, drought, and soil compaction.
