Nandina domestica 'Monfar'

Common Name: Sienna Sunrise Bamboo

Nandina domestica ‘Monfar’ Sienna SunriseŽ Heavenly Bamboo / Sienna SunriseŽ Nandina Nandina domestica ‘Monfar’, commonly sold as Sienna SunriseŽ, is a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub grown mainly for its vivid foliage color. New spring growth emerges intense red to reddish-orange, matures to green through summer, then regains red highlights in fall and winter. It has an upright, compact, mounding habit with fine-textured, bamboo-like foliage and may occasionally produce small white spring flowers, though it is primarily valued for foliage. Type: Broadleaf evergreen / semi-evergreen shrub Mature Size: 2 ft. wide × 3–4 ft. tall USDA Zones: 6a–10b Form: Upright, compact, dense mound Light: Full sun to part shade; best red foliage color with good sun Soil / Water: Average, well-drained soil; moderate water, drought tolerant once established Bloom Time / Length: Spring; occasional small white flowers, usually brief and not the main ornamental feature Wildlife: Flowers may attract bees when present; fruiting is limited compared with species nandina, but nandina berries can be toxic to birds and pets. Features & Landscape Uses: Useful as a colorful accent shrub, foundation plant, low hedge, mass planting, mixed border plant, or container specimen. ‘Monfar’ is especially valued for its strong red new growth and winter foliage color. Use caution where Nandina domestica is considered invasive; Missouri Botanical Garden notes nandina can be invasive in some areas, especially in the South. Care: Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment. Prune selectively in late winter or early spring to remove older or damaged stems and maintain shape. Avoid heavy shearing so the plant keeps its natural layered, mounded form. Foliage may yellow in alkaline soils
