Common Name: Plum Passion Bamboo
Nandina domestica ‘Monum’ Plum Passion® Plum Passion® Heavenly Bamboo / Plum Passion® Nandina Nandina domestica ‘Monum’, sold as Plum Passion®, is an upright evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub grown for bold, changing foliage color. New growth emerges deep purple-red in spring and summer, matures to dark green, then turns rich reddish-purple again in fall and winter. It has a taller, more upright habit than dwarf nandinas like ‘Fire Power’ and works well as a colorful accent, foundation shrub, hedge, mixed-border plant, or mass planting. It may produce small white flowers in late spring to summer followed by red berries. Type: Broadleaf evergreen / semi-evergreen shrub Mature Size: 3 ft. wide × 4–5 ft. tall USDA Zones: 6a–11b Form: Upright, dense, cane-like shrub Light: Full sun to part shade; strongest purple-red color with good sun Soil / Water: Average, moist, well-drained soil; moderate water, with some drought tolerance once established Bloom Time / Length: Late spring to summer; small white flowers, usually brief Wildlife: Flowers may attract bees; red berries may attract birds, but nandina berries can be toxic to birds and pets if eaten in quantity. Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent for dramatic foliage color, foundation plantings, informal hedges, mixed shrub borders, containers, mass plantings, and winter interest. Its plum-red new growth gives stronger spring and summer color than many standard nandinas, while the fall and winter foliage deepens to reddish purple. Use caution where Nandina domestica is considered invasive, especially in warmer southeastern areas. Care: Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment. Prune selectively in late winter or early spring by removing older or damaged stems at the base rather than shearing. Best foliage color develops in sun, though afternoon shade can help in hot climates. Remove berries or spent flower clusters if reseeding or wildlife toxicity is a concern.
