Common Name: Jon Jon Magnolia
Magnolia ‘Jon Jon’ (Jon Jon Magnolia) is a deciduous shrub or small tree with a vigorous, upright to broadly rounded habit. It produces exceptionally large, fragrant flowers that open later than many magnolias, helping reduce frost damage risk. The blooms are creamy white to pale blush with a rosy-purple flush at the base, and they often open from goblet-shaped buds to broad, nearly flat flowers in mid-spring. Type: Shrub / small tree Mature Size: 15–20' W × 20–30' H USDA Zones: 6b–9a Form: Upright to broadly rounded Light: Full sun to part shade Soil / Water: Rich, well-drained soils; moderate water, prefers consistent moisture during establishment Bloom Time / Length: Mid-spring; moderate (about 2–3 weeks) Wildlife: Bees Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a specimen, lawn tree, or focal point in larger beds and gardens. Its later bloom time, huge fragrant flowers, and soft two-tone coloring make it especially useful in areas where early magnolias are often damaged by late frosts. Care: Plant in a protected site with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, and mulch to help keep roots cool and evenly moist. Prune only if needed just after flowering.
